This may seem like a strange first photo, but the ceiling removal starts with removing the upper cabinets. You will find that they were screwed into aluminum riv nuts, which probably have come loose and may even spin forcing you to cut the heads off of the original bolts to get the cabinets out. This is what an original riv nut looks like. I replaced them all with new steel ones set with the tool shown two photos down.
