There are many types of polishing and buffing systems and this one is just happens to be a12 inch bench machine. What is important is that the cotton buffing wheels or pads need to be open and “air cooled”. Fully stitched or “stiff” wheels can melt and damage the plastic. While this is 12 inch, 6 inch wheels are available and polishing bonnets on hand grinders or polishers can be also very effective. The abrasive that is used is different for the systems available as well. Creams, Wax Bars, or other types could be used for the system you are using. You will see that this bench polisher has an abrasive wheel and a final polishing wheel. I use Jewellers Rouge in a wax bar that is applied to the abrasive wheel and then final polish is the soft cloth wheel. Remember that either the product, or the polishing system must be anchored, or the lens will fly and be irreparably damaged.
