I just learned that John & Rita Nicholls rolled their GMC Royale on the way home from Bean Station. They're both OK; just minor bruises & scrapes.
From John: Rita had just taken the wheel at a rest stop south of Montgomery, near Greenville, AL, about 4 miles back. John had just climbed into the passenger seat and strapped in when he noticed that Rita seemed to be fighting the wheel at lot. About that time 3 tractor-trailers passed (I don't know how fast she was driving but suspect not very at that time). As the third one went by, the GMC became uncontrollable. John's description of the next couple of seconds is dramatic but not very coherent. At any rate, they wound up at the bottom of a pretty steep embankment lodged against a tree, with the coach on 6 wheels and little body above the waistline. They were in the seats 'though Rita immediately unbuckled and fell to the sofa behind the driver's seat. The coach was facing northerly, I understand.
The toad was also headed back north, some distance beyond the coach. The ball came off, or apart, I don't know which. The coiled safety cables were intact but the snap clips were nowhere to be found.
A fire started near the gas filler, from which Rita was pretty well soaked. John located a fire extinguisher among the debris and put the fire out without much damage from that.
John suspects the toad of initiating the whole thing: when examined at the junk yard, the its right front tire was flat. Makes sense to me: Rita's steering difficulties were likely due to the unstable toad and were compounded by the blast from the tractor trailers.
Another miracle of passenger survival in a totaled GMC!
