Once the guts, or circuit board from the oval LED is removed, it needs to be oriented in a way that works best for the fixture. If you look at the lens of the newer model tail light it becomes clear that 2 boards in a horizontal orientation will work best. But it must also be understood that the LED but be far enough away from the face of the lens to let the light spread out to the prisms of the lens face. The housing reflector also must be large enough to accommodate the footprint of the LED lighting board. Some careful measurement is important.
