When I installed my new 1977 455 crate engine a few years ago, I blocked off the exhaust crossover under the carburetor, as recommended by all the experts, so I lost the heated air supply to actuate the choke coil. I didn't want to add an electric choke as I have had lots of problems with them on another GMC. I ran a 1/4" diameter copper tube from the choke coil housing port down to the right side exhaust header and raped it around the header four times. Then I routed it back to the port on the carburetor where the OEM heating tube connected. The heated air being sucked thru the copper tube operates the choke just as well as the OEM connection. I used two SS radiator clamps to hold the copper tube in contact with the header tube.
