The Clare's '78 GMC in Australia

This is our 1978 GMC Eleganza II which I imported to Australia some 5 years ago which I have converted to meet Australia requirements and it is now registered in WA where I might add that the licensing requirements are a little different to other states, for example;
I didn't have to convert to RH drive as in WA any vehicle over 15 years old is considered a classic, however to meet the requirement of having access to the nearside as the GMC does not have a LH drivers door exit (some American Motorhomes do), rather than disrupt the galley side of the vehicle they alllowed me to put a door in the rear as I have a fold down bed layout and when the bed is not in use, whilst on the road, it gives me access. I did this work myself at a cost of glass and parts of $750.00
Other changes were basic as for any motorhome here in Australia, eg if you convert to 240 volt or provide bottle gas you will need the work to be carried out by a licensensed operator who will provide a certificate for the work. Here in WA also you need an Auto Engineer's inspection and certificate which costs abouit $350.00.
I have done quite a few other modifications to upgrade my unit such as replace the oven and cooktop with a new cooktop on bottle gas, removed internal heater and gas (LPG) exterior tank for more storage, replaced interior cupboards and blinds.
All the above has been worthwhile as I still have a classic motorhome at a very reasonable cost.
In refernce to parts I use a local GMC dealer for standard GMC mechanical parts as the motor is GMC Oldsmobile and parts should be availble at reputable GMC dealers. For other GMC parts I use either Jim Kanata in Fremont California, as or Jim Bounds at GMC Coop Motor Works in Orlando Florida, I have met both over the past couple of years in my travels through the States, both are great guys and very helpful. Watch out on freight costs and yes anything that you import as parts, under the value of AUD$1,000.00 is duty free.
