I believe the tail light lens is made from Polystyrene. Polystyrene was a very common material during the 70s. This is an advantage because it can be easily “tooled” Yes its harder, (Cracks) but it can be easily refinish and polish. I used to have my students work it into many products. Using 220 sand paper, clear the majority of imperfections from the surface of the lens. Don't go so far as to clear off the lettering. I like to have them there because that is what it looked like originally. BUT There may be some very deep imperfections that would take away too much material. Use good judgment. It may be OK to just leave it there. The purpose is to eventually have a mostly polished surface when your finished. This is simply the first steps.
