Seat_Belt_Retractor_005
As soon as there is any movement of the belt toward the retract position the black ring rotates back and the pawl falls into the notch as shown here. Once in the notch the pawl is able to catch the notches in the gold colored ring which is part of the seat belt spool.

I should have said the black ring rotates FORWARD allowing the pawl to fall int the notch. Bill
