Use 1/2\" x 1/2\" aluminum angle iron and cut to fit curve of body panel and attach with small sheet metal screws. Align the inside edge with the outside of the slot in the panel. The straight side of the angle will have to be cut to just clear the latch when the door is pushed to the closed position.
