Schematic showing a combiner installed with an isolator, 2008 version.
This is Gene Fisher's modified approach to installing a combiner, and it's a good one. It provides all the benefits of the combiner, plus it fulfills the additional requirements of preserving the engine-running-only voltage on the alternator output wire. Folks first installing a combiner, who have a functioning diode isolator, should use this schematic.
